The 1957 Desoto
October 20th, 2009The 1957 models of Chrysler’s Desoto brand are one of the most distinctive and innovative models of all time. Thanks to designer Virgil Exner’s “Forward Look” design, the ‘57 Desoto became an instant classic, and is still one of the most stunning, beautiful, and desirable car models of all time.

Perhaps the most obvious thing that the 1957 Desoto brought to the world was it’s huge, sweeping fins and sleek and stylish design. Needless to say that this was a huge step-up from the cars of 1956, and whereas Chrysler’s lineup looked like it came straight from the future to consumers, the cars of Ford and GM looked like the bulky, awkward, outdated carryovers from 1956 that they mostly were. This ended up as a pretty big advantage for Chrysler, who posted record sales numbers in ‘57, selling more cars that year than any other year in their long history up until then. Plymouth regained its position as the number 3 best selling automobile in the United States, while Desoto sold in record number that would never again be reached by the brand in its shortened lifecycle after Chrysler decided to abandon the brand after the 1961 production line.
